Chaos enroute to an alarm

Saturday I was listening to my radio when I heard “Emergency traffic, Emergency traffic!” come over it.  Of course that caused my ears to perk up.  Then I heard, “Emergency traffic, squad 37 has just been involved in an injury accident just south of the station.”  Immediately I jumped up… It was close and likely to be good friends who were involved.  So I tore out of the house and took off in my car to help out.  Little did I know I would be first in the scene, and what a scene it was.  I saw a squad upside down in a drainage ditch and no firefighters visible.  I looked around a saw another vehicle… but did not immediately see any passengers.  Fortunately the firefighters ended up being ok.  They went home the next day.  I was really worried about the little girl who was hurt but am told she is going to be ok.  Whew!

Whether it turns out to be the citizen’s fault or the squad driver’s fault, it really does not matter.  We all are responsible for being attentive on the road.  As firefighters, we have to expect the public to do the wrong thing.  As the public, we need to be aware of our surroundings.  We all have the responsibility to be safe on the road!

The following video is from our local television station, KWCH.  They did a good job!
